About Us

Updated 7/9/2019

Welcome to the Groton Area School District. Our team of administrators, educators and support staff take pride in your academic achievement. We share your vision for the future. It is our goal to give you direction by establishing high expectations for you that will be reflected in your academic achievement, your co-curricular involvement, and your contributions to your community.

The Groton Area School District is a rural school district situated around the intersection of US Highway 12 and South Dakota Highway 37 in Northeast South Dakota.  Click here for a map of our campus. The District covers approximately 873 square miles of primarily agricultural land in Brown, Day, Marshall, and Spink counties. Of our nearly 600 students, approximately 17% qualify for free or reduced priced lunches, well below state and national averages.

Our physical proximity to Aberdeen allows some growth in student enrollment due to open enrollment of students, particularly those living in and around the Bath, SD area. It also allows us to hire teachers living in Aberdeen taking advantage of the amenities and housing opportunities provided by a larger community. The eastern portion of our District includes the community of Bristol. The Groton Area District loses students from open enrollment to the Webster Area District. In all, the District loses approximately 20 students in total to the open enrollment provisions.

The District recently completed a major renovation of the Groton Area Elementary School to include the upgrade of security provisions, the construction of a new commons/lunch room and administrative offices and secured entrance, improved student drop-off/pick-up, complete classroom renovations including increased natural lighting and fully enclosing all classrooms. The building received complete upgrades in electrical service, wireless internet access, heating, and air conditioning.

District assessment results remain strong in comparison to state-averages. Our students perform well on the Dakota STEP test and on the ACT test relative to the scores of their statewide peers. We recognize the changing scenery of instruction and assessment that are upon us with the adoption and implementation of new State of South Dakota content standards and the need to stay current with ever-changing student demographics.

Groton Area Elementary continues to use the Response to Intervention approach to reading instruction. It is our goal that in providing early interventions to our youngest learners will put them on the appropriate trajectory to academic success, and ultimately college and career readiness. During the 2013-2014 school year, the school day was extended by a period of approximately 20 minutes. The additional 20 minutes are being used to help implement a similar program for mathematics instruction, especially focused on grades K-2 in the area of number sense.

Groton Area High School offers a strong selection of Career and Technical Education courses in house including Family and Consumer Sciences, Industrial Technology, Agriculture, Business Education, and Student Internships. We are proud of the variety of courses that we have been able to provide for our students.
